The World War II officially started on September 1, 1939 by invasion of German troops to Poland. Battles took place at all parts of the world on land and sea.

Russia participated in the WWII as a part of Soviet Union which consisted of 15 republics. Soviet troops saw the first combat on September 17, 1939 by entering the territory of Poland which was crashed by two most powerful countries in Europe. Later on Soviet Union invaded eastern part of Finland capturing its territories.

Though the role of Soviet Union in WWII is quite controversial nobody can deny its significant  role in defeating of Nazi Germany. Hitler's forces attacked Soviet Union on June 22, 1941 at 4.00 AM. The war against Hitler lasted until May 9, 1945 and took its end in the capital of Germany Berlin.

The crucial battles on Eastern front were near Moscow in 1941, Stalingrad in 1942 and Prokhorovka village in 1943. The Stalingrad battle is considered as the most important event because it forced German troops to retreat until the end of the war.

As a result Soviet troops liberated Eastern Europe from the brutal regime of Adolf Hitler. Our army also took part in military operation against Japan liberating China from Japanese troops.
